Char-grilled Gleezy Dog on a poppy seed bun

My brother-in-law is from Chicago, and he will tell you so before you have finished shaking his hand.

October, high noon, a breeze with real opinions coming across the course. Hole 7. He stood over a twelve-footer that broke left off a ridge, then right at the cup, and he talked the whole time about Wrigley, about the lake, about a hot dog stand on a corner he refuses to name.

He made the putt. Naturally.

So when his Chicago-style hot dog came out to the patio, I watched his face. A char-grilled Gleezy Dog in a poppy seed bun. Yellow mustard, bright as a caution flag. Fresh tomatoes. Diced onions and pickled onions, the crisp and the sour, side by side like twins who went to different colleges. Pepperoncinis with a little sting in them. A pickle spear riding along the top, long as a lag putt. And over all of it, a dusting of celery salt, the quiet detail that tells you somebody cared.

Crunch. Tang. Snap. Balance.

He took one bite and went silent for the first time since the parking lot.

I have known this man eleven years. I have never once beaten him on a green. But I watched him reach for a napkin, close his eyes and nod, and I counted it as a win on my own private scorecard.
