Grilled Shrimp
Caesar Salad

Romaine, parmesan, crouton crumble and Caesar dressing

Grilled Shrimp Caesar Salad, romaine, parmesan, crouton crumble and Caesar dressing

October. A cold front had come through overnight, and the afternoon wind was carrying leaves across the course like it had somewhere important to be.

I was on the 14th, staring down a sidehill putt that broke a full cup and a half, when a stranger on the next green called over. "Wind's pushing it," he said. "Play more break." I don't take advice from strangers. I played more break. It went in.

I bought him lunch on the patio before either of us played the 15th. It seemed only fair.

We both ordered the Grilled Shrimp Caesar Salad. Shrimp off the grill, warm against the chill. Romaine, cold and crisp, standing up to the wind. Parmesan shaved over everything like the first snowfall of the season. A crouton crumble that gave every bite a little crunch, a little ceremony. And Caesar dressing, rich and savory, the way a good Caesar should be, the way they've been since before either of us was born.

He told me he used to putt on a carpet in his first apartment, aiming at a coffee mug. Hours a night. Thirty years ago.

"It shows," I said.

He finished his shrimp, shook my hand, and walked back out toward the 15th. I never got his name. I still play more break.
