October. Leaves skittering across the patio at PopStroke The Colony like they had somewhere to be. My father, seventy-one, in the cardigan he has owned since the Carter administration, standing over a twelve-foot putt on the seventh green.
He studied it for a long time. Uphill, then a hard left break near the cup. He used to teach me to read greens on the living room carpet with a coffee mug for a hole.
He made it. Of course he did. He has been making that putt my entire life.
Afterward we sat beneath the patio lights and he ordered for both of us, the way he did when I was nine. A 1/2 rack dinner. Tender baby back ribs, slow-cooked until the meat gives up any pretense of resistance, then finished on the grill, so the outside takes on a little char and a little drama. The bones slide clean. You don't so much eat these ribs as accept them.
And beside them, a side of crispy fries. Salted. Hot. Gone too quickly, as good things are.
We didn't talk much. We didn't have to. The scorecard sat between us, his name on top, mine one stroke behind, exactly where it has always belonged.
He wiped his hands, looked at the sky, and said, "Same time next year." I am already counting the days.

Surf instructors are out of this world. Kind and make people want to join in! My little brother came to town this week and Ryan showed him some sauce baby, he was absolutely shredding. Food was heat the mahi tacos are so buss, sliders are fire, and the Kona big wave, let me just say “Heat in the cold of winter” that’s how she makes me feel.
