Three to an order, tossed in Nashville hot dry rub

Nashville Hot Sliders

July. High noon. The kind of heat that makes the greens shimmer like a mirage outside Barstow. My rival, a man named Dale who wears his visor backwards out of spite, had just drained a twenty-footer on the 9th at PopStroke Cedar Park, downhill, right edge, never in doubt.

I needed something to restore my fighting spirit.

At the turn I marched us to the patio and ordered. Three of them arrived. Three crispy chicken sliders, lined up like a firing squad of flavor. Each one tossed in a fiery Nashville hot dry rub, the color of a brick wall in late sun, then finished with a drizzle of hot sauce for those who felt the rub was being too polite. Nashville hot chicken, the real thing.

They sat on buttery brioche buns, soft as an apology. Classic pickle chips tucked in for crunch and a cool, briny sense of proportion. The first bite was loud enough to turn heads. The second one set off a small, controlled fire somewhere behind my eyes. By the third, I was a different man. Clearer. Sharper. Possibly sweating.

Dale asked for one. I considered it for a long moment.

Then I walked out to the 10th, read the two-tier green from the low side, and rolled a long lag that died at the lip like it had been trained to sit and stay.

Tap-in par. Dale stopped talking. The heat, I find, works in both directions.
